World Language Conference and Workshop: Special Topics in World Language Education

Course Description: 

Idioma Education & Consulting invites conference participants to register for approved PD hours for conference attendance and brief reflection, or three graduate credits for attending a world language or professional educators conference and the completion of the post conference course. 

Required Texts (for 3 graduate-level credits ONLY)

Glisan, Eileen W., and Richard Donato. Enacting the Work of Language Instruction. Volume 2: High-Leverage Teaching Practices. ACTFL, 2021.

Course Delivery

Participants choosing to earn 3 graduate-level credits are required to complete 45 combined contact hours and assignment hours. All coursework is assigned on Schoology for which you will receive an invitation upon registration.

In this context “contact hours” are the hours spent attending sessions or workshops and participating in conference-related learning activities; and “assignment hours” are the hours spent on assignments in the course. See the examples for each below:

Acceptable Contact Hour Activities

  1. Attendance at sessions, workshops & presentations

  2. Provide a list of workshops, including the number of hours) that you attended during the conference and summarize each one in 1-2 paragraphs.·   

  3. Discussions with colleagues, presenters & members of the educational community    

  4. Reading about, watching videos on related topics, reviewing conference website and conference program

  5. Networking, following up with contacts for future connections·

  6. All activities may be performed before, during, and after the conference

Acceptable Assignment Hour Activities

  1. Discussion board posts allow course participants to engage in a conversation around the theory, research, and practice as presented in the lectures, videos, and readings in each module.

  2. Journal reflections allow participants to think critically about the reading, activities and the conference workshops they have completed during the course. Participants will tie their own practice in an attempt to understand how language learning and teaching guiding principles drive their own work.

  3. After the completion of the conference, workshops and coursework, participants will design a unit plan (3-4 lessons) on a topic relevant to their own practice related to the course content. 

Participants choose to earn 1 graduate-level credit are required to complete and submit a reflection assignment. All coursework is assigned on Schoology for which you will receive an invitation upon registration.

Participants choosing to earn 15 professional development hours are required to submit a Conference Reflection Form which Idioma will send upon registration.

While the graduate credits and professional development hours earned may be used for salary advancement, degree completion and state licensing requirements, Idioma does not provide assurance that any state licensing board or school district will accept these credits or hours for those purposes. Participants are advised to check with the appropriate agencies and gain approval prior to registering. An official university transcript is available upon successful completion of coursework through the selected university from which the participant chooses to receive credit. Participants who complete the course for graduate-level credit will receive an email with instructions on how to request an official university transcript.
